What is the difference between AZW and AZW3?

AZW is based on the older MOBI format. AZW3 (also called KF8) is Amazon's newer format with richer HTML/CSS support. Calibre converts both.

Why can't this convert AZW in the browser?

AZW/AZW3 is a proprietary Amazon binary format. Fully decoding it in JavaScript is not currently possible without a dedicated library, which doesn't exist for browsers.

What about DRM-protected Kindle books?

DRM-protected books (most purchased Kindle books) are encrypted and cannot be legally converted. Only DRM-free AZW files can be converted with Calibre.

Where do I find DRM-free AZW files?

Some publishers sell DRM-free ebooks directly (e.g. Baen, Tor). Calibre can also handle AZW files from personal documents you sent to Kindle.
